Yucatan Guitar Summit March 5-12, 2019

Yucatan Guitar Summit

The Yucatan Guitar Summit is a week long guitar retreat, in the heart of the Yucatan, at Sotuta de Peon, Hacienda Viva. Sotuta de Peon is a fully restored and operational hacienda that produces henequen fiber (once called “Green Gold”), from the raw plant into various products, such as rope, commonly known as Sisal. Everything from the machinery to the main house has been beautifully restored. Underwater crystalline rivers (known as cenotes), lush tropical gardens, and a stable of horses, are all part of the expansive and unique property, as well as first rate accommodations fashioned after traditional Mayan casitas, and two restaurants featuring exotic Yucatan cuisine.

During the weeklong retreat, we will feature a wide range of events exploring all aspects of guitar playing. We’ll conduct workshops, jams, and concerts, designed to advance one’s approach to the instrument, but most of all, we’ll have a lot of fun in the process. Musical performance, and technique will be be covered, as well as strategies to develop composition and improvisation skills. You don’t have to just play guitar to attend, we’ve had sax players, and violinists attend who enjoyed the experience, and they were also an invaluable addition to the late night jams.

We’ve had special guest musicians like Kenny Lee Lewis from the Steve Miller Band, and Vinnie DeMasi, an accomplished guitarist and contributor to Guitar Player Magazine attend the retreat to add extra depth and dimension to the musical events. We often go into the beautiful town of Merida to see the market, or plan a day trip to the ancient pyramid site of Mayapan. Traditional Mayan healing therapies such as massage, and Temazcal, are available, as is horse back riding, and swimming in the cenote, or the luxurious outdoor pool.
