Grant Barrett 1936 – 2025

Dad grew up on Yonge St., spent summers with his grandfather in Port McNicoll and after a brief stint as a porter on the CN railway he went to UofT, graduated and became a teacher, principal and eventually area superintendent. My mom spotted him while he was working on a ladder changing the Fairlawn Theatre marque – they married in 1960 and had my brother Stephen and I a few years later. There was MTHL hockey, bass fishing at Eels Lake and summers in Daytona Beach. Dad loved football, coaching, bridge, and curling, but mostly golf – even one day managing a hole in one at Whitevale. Some of his happiest times were after his granddaughters were born and we had epic family events – he loved Willie Nelson and the Grindstone Cowboys. He and my mother made it just shy of their 65 Wedding Anniversary, and at the age of 88 he had a full active life right up until last week when he had the stroke. He didn’t suffer and was surrounded by our family at Sunnybrooke when he passed away last night at 9pm. We were able to say our goodbyes and I was able to tell my dad I loved him and thank him for always being there when I needed him the most.
